Several summer music programs for kids and teens
The University's Community Music School is offering three summer
programs for children and teens-a Wind Ensemble Camp, a Summer Voice
Institute and Keyboards for Kids.
Wind Ensemble Camp is scheduled from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m., July 10-
14. The daily schedule will include two large group rehearsals
conducted by Robert Streckfuss, associate professor of music;
sectional rehearsals conducted by UD music faculty and advanced music
majors, and theory classes and master classes. The program will
conclude with a concert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, July 14, in the Loudis
Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.
The camp is open to students in grades 9-12, as well as college-
level musicians. Applicants must have the recommendation of their band
directors or private teachers. Tuition is $130 including lunch.
The University Summer Vocal Institute is scheduled from 9 a.m.-5
p.m., Aug. 14-18. Faculty from the Department of Music who will teach
at the institute include Melanie DeMent and Marie Robinson, both
associate professors; Patrick Evans, assistant professor; and Ruth
Oatman. Students will have two private voice lessons during the week
and participate in theory classes designed to help prepare them for
collegiate level theory requirements.
Classes in diction, master classes and lectures on topics such as
career opportunities, audition techniques and practice procedures will
be included in the week-long program. The institute culminates in a
recital at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 18, in the Loudis Recital Hall of
the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.
Admission is limited to 24 students, and the institute will be
filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Tuition is $160 for the
week, including lunch. The Vocal Institute is open to students from
grades 9-12, as well as college-level musicians. Applicants must have
the recommendation of their choral directors or voice teachers.
Keyboards for Kids is a week-long program scheduled from 9 a.m.-
noon, July 31-Aug. 4. Open to children ages 6-9, the program is
designed to nurture children's musical development by involving them
in singing and movement activities and by introducing them to
keyboards and recorders. Taught by Lisa Papilli and Kecia Hayman,
students can look forward to lots of fun while learning basic concepts
that will serve as a foundation for further musical study.
Tuition is $110 for the week, including a daily snack. Enrollment
is limited and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
