Volleyball trophy named for Viera

The East Coast Girls Volleyball Junior Olympic Championships
trophy will be named in honor of Barbara Viera, head women's
volleyball coach at the University.
The championships have been held at the University each Memorial
Day weekend for the past 13 years. The event was begun by Viera, with
assistance from Ed Maher, who is active in junior volleyball in
Pennsylvania.
More than 275 teams are expected to compete this year. More than
4,000 athletes have taken part in the tournament during the past 13
years.
The "Barbara Viera 18 and Under Tournament Championship Award,"
will be presented to the winning team each year, according to East
Coast Championships director, E.C. "Chip" Reiley.
"If not for Barbara and Ed, the kids of today would not have this
great event to attend each year," Reiley said. "We thought long and
hard about how to properly honor Barbara and her contributions to this
event. We felt this would be a way to accomplish our goal."
Viera recently completed her 22nd season as head coach of the UD
women's volleyball team, leading the Blue Hens to a 33-16 record and
second North Atlantic Conference championship in three years. Viera's
588 career victories rank seventh on the all-time National Collegiate
Athletic Association Division I volleyball coaching list.
