Dean to chair board of ocean research coalition

Carolyn A. Thoroughgood, dean of the College of Marine Studies
and director of the Sea Grant College Program, has been elected
chairperson of the board of governors of the Consortium for
Oceanographic Research and Education (CORE).
This national coalition of academic oceanographic institutions
was formed last September to provide a collective voice in presenting
the capabilities and needs of the U.S. marine science community to the
public, the federal government and ocean science industry.
Specifically, CORE seeks to increase public awareness and
understanding of ocean issues; to strengthen the links among
oceanographic science, technology, research and development in
academia, federal agencies and industry; and to advance a strong U.S.
program in ocean science research and education.
"The world's oceans play a significant role in our lives,
generating our weather and providing us with food, jobs,
transportation and recreation," Thoroughgood said. "Academic research
provides the essential foundation for addressing the major ocean
challenges facing us today, from global climate change to fisheries
decline.
"As chair of CORE's board of governors, my first responsibility
will be to foster greater interaction between scientists, federal
policy makers and marine industries, so that ocean research is
adequately supported and research results are effectively communicated
and applied for the benefit of both the public and the marine
environment."
CORE's member institutions represent the majority of the nation's
university-based professionals actively involved in research and
education in oceanographic science and technology. Collectively, the
coalition members receive 90 percent of the federally sponsored,
university-based research in these disciplines.
Member institutions include Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean
Sciences, University of California at San Diego, University of
California Consortium (consisting of campuses at Irvine, Los Angeles,
Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz), Columbia University, University of
Delaware, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, University of
Hawaii, University of Maryland, University of Miami, University of
Michigan, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, Moss Landing
Marine Laboratories, North Carolina State University, University of
North Carolina at Wilmington, Old Dominion University, Oregon State
University, University of Rhode Island, Rutgers University, University
of Southern Mississippi, University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M
University, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, University of
Washington and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
Thoroughgood's research interests are lipid metabolism of marine
organisms, the nutritional biochemistry of bivalve mollusks and the
nutritional evaluation and preservation of fisheries products.
She joined the Delaware faculty in 1968 and was appointed
associate dean of marine studies in 1980, and dean and Sea Grant
program director in 1985.
