Teaching retreat set May 31-June 2
The third annual Wakonese-East Faculty Teaching Retreat will be
held from Wednesday-Friday, May 31-June 2, at Sandy Hill Conference
Center, on the Elk River near North East, Md.
The event, sponsored by the Center for Teaching Effectiveness
(CTE), offers a time for faculty to focus on many aspects of teaching.
The residential setting is designed to create an environment where
faculty are immersed in discussing and learning about various teaching
models and issues.
The program content is determined and delivered by the
participants, not outside consultants. Participants will meet as a
group during the week of April 20 to plan objectives and develop the
agenda.
Prior retreats have included sessions on multimedia presentation
techniques, handling large enrollment classes, syllabus design, active
learning models, managing classroom conflicts, storytelling in the
classroom, the case method approach and problem-based learning.
The cost is $150 per person and includes two nights' lodging, all
meals, refreshment breaks, use of recreational facilities and handout
materials. The retreat is partially funded by a CTE Improvement of
Instruction Grant.
A non-refundable $25 deposit, by March 17, must accompany each
registration form, which should be sent to the Center for Teaching
Effectiveness. The remaining $125 must be paid in full by April 14.
Refunds will be given for cancellations received by noon, April 28.
Full-time residency at the retreat is expected. Single session or one-
day participation is not usually an option. Enrollment is limited to
32 participants.
