Letter from the VP for Employee Relations
Dear Colleagues:
The Employee Wellness Center has made arrangements with
Mammography of Delaware, a cooperative effort of the state and the
Medical Center of Delaware, to offer low-cost screening mammograms on
our campus for University female employees aged 35 and over. The cost
is $74.
The Mammography of Delaware's mobile service coach will be at the
University for the screenings from 9-11 a.m., Monday, April 17.
A screening mammogram is a simple, safe X-ray examination of the
breast available to women who have no symptoms of breast disease. It
is estimated that one of every nine women will develop breast cancer
in their lifetimes. Early detection with mammography is the best tool
for successful treatment since it can detect lumps three to five years
earlier than a physical examination. Ninety-five percent of breast
cancer found at this early stage can be successfully treated.
The American Cancer Society guidelines for screening are:
Age Recommendation
By age 40 Baseline mammogram
Ages 40-49 Mammogram every 1-2 years
Ages 50 plus Mammogram every year
The screening in the Mammography of Delaware's mobile services
coach takes approximately 10 minutes. The coach is specially designed
for comfort and privacy. The most advanced low-dose X-ray equipment is
used, and the exposure is similar to that of a dental X-ray. In
addition, specially trained female technologists assist during the
screening procedure. Examination results are reported to you and the
physician you designate within three-five working days.
Female employees are encouraged to take advantage of this
convenient opportunity. Reservations must be made in advance. Fifteen
to 20 slots are available. To make an appointment or for more
information, contact Mammography of Delaware, telephone 1-800-654-
0606.
Through monthly breast self-examinations, yearly clinical exams
and regular mammograms, the success rate for treating breast cancers
is 95 percent. For that reason, I sincerely hope that you will take
advantage of this special screening opportunity. Do it for yourself!
Sincerely,
Maxine R. Colm
Vice President for Employee Relations
