Images of Victorian women on display in University Gallery
In An Ideal Light: Images of Victorian Women," a University
exhibition drawn from the University Gallery's collection of works on
paper, will be on view during Women's History Month at the gallery in
Old College.
It is being shown concurrently with "Appeal To This Age,
Photography of the Civil Rights Movement, 1954-1968." Both exhibitions
will be open through April 10.
"In An Ideal Light," which was organized by students in the
University Gallery Curatorial Apprenticeship Program, examines both
the real and ideal images of women in the Victorian era. Though not
limited to women artists, the exhibition incudes several rarely seen
images of important American women artists, such as Mary Cassatt,
Gertrude Kasebier and Violet Oakley.
The exhibition strives to showcase the many roles of women in the
Victorian era-not simply as wife and mother but as artist, poet,
suffragette, socialite and intellectual. Women from all social classes
are represented in order to view the lives of all women from the era.
The selection of prints, photographs, drawings and paintings
explores the social, cultural, political and aesthetic role of women.
Above all, the exhibition helps illuminate the essential and ever-
changing contributions of women to history.
The Curatorial Apprenticeship Program offers undergraduate
students of diverse majors the opportunity to explore the various
duties and tasks involved in all aspects of the museum profession.
Students volunteer their time in the University Gallery in exchange
for the experience and knowledge gained.
This year, students devoted much of their time to the
organization and preparation of this exhibit, gallery curator Belena
Chapp said. Apprentices involved in the exhibition are Daniel Blank,
Amanda Burdan, Paul Faulstich, Michael Macauley, Julia Phillips,
Alicia Riegal, Rebecca Rudman, Jennifer Schmidt, Kendra Schweitzer,
Nichole Scofield, Ajay Vaidya and Bree Wetherhold.
The University Gallery is located on the second floor of Old
