Awards to honor Prof. Hoerl
Arthur Hoerl, a retired University statistics professor, died
Dec. 13 in Newark aim, the Delaware chapter of the American
Statistical Association has created a monetary award to be given
annually to the best paper by a graduate student in Delaware on the
development and application of statistical methods.
To fund this award, the chapter is has set a fundraising goal of
$10,000.
Dr. Hoerl came to the University in 1967 and retired in 1986 as a
professor emeritus of statistics, but he continued to teach courses
and participate in graduate student supervision and counseling.
Before his academic career, he was successful in industry. In
1950, he was the first statistician to be hired by the DuPont Co.
Born in Brooklyn, he moved to California and earned a bachelor's
degree in mechanical engineering and a master's degree in mathematics
from the University of Southern California. He is survived by Marge,
his wife of 47 years, four sons and four grandchildren.
