Visiting educator to speak March 1
     Renowned educator Jawanzaa Kunjufu, president of African American
Images, will speak at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 1, in Room 130 of Smith
Hall. His free public talk, "UPLIFT: The Resurrection of a Nation," is
part of the University's 1995 African Consciousness Celebration.
     Author of several books, including Countering the Conspiracy to
Destroy Black Boys I and II, Kunjufu is known for his insight into the
social conditions that affect the black family, black males, black
economics and black male/female relationships.
     His observations and views have been sought by Oprah Winfrey and
Tony Brown, as well as Essence and Ebony magazines, to name a few. He
has said he is dedicated to bringing peace to the black community.
     Kunjufu's Newark appearance is sponsored by the Center for Black
Culture, the Cultural Programming Advisory Board, the Office of
Affirmative Action and Multicultural Programs and the Black American
Studies Program at the University.

Three residence life programs set
     In celebration of Women's History Month, the Office of Residence
Life is presenting three residence hall programs at 8 p.m. on
consecutive Thursdays, beginning March 9.
     Jessica Schiffman, program coordinator of women's studies, will
speak March 9 on "Violence against Women, Today and in the Past." The
program will be in Pencader Commons I.
     YOUGOTTAWANNA, a women's a cappella folk group from New
Hampshire, will perform on March 16 in the Harrington A/B lounge.
     Charlotte Staelin, from the history department at Wesley College,
will speak March 23 on "The Effect of Economic Development on Women in
the 1990s" in the Warner Hall lounge.
     Refreshments will be served at the free, public programs. The
Delaware Humanities Forum is co-sponsoring the March 9 and 23
programs.

AAUW to hold benefit book sale
     The Wilmington branch of the American Association of University
Women (AAUW) will hold its Dollars for Scholars annual used book sale
at the Concord Mall from 10 a.m.-9:30 p.m., Thursday-Saturday, March 9-
11; and from noon-5 p.m., Sunday, March 12.
     Included in the sale will be more than 50,000 books, including
children's books, valuable sets, rare collections and art books. In
addition, there will be a large selection of sheet music and some 78
RPM records in excellent condition. This year, the branch also has
distributed Reader Recognition Awards, worth $3 each at the sale, to
interested teachers and students in area schools.
     Proceeds of the sale will benefit the branch's scholarship fund
and AAUW's national fellowship foundation.
