Mitchell Hall a winner

Ewing Cole Cherry Brott, the Philadelphia architectural, design
and planning firm employed by the University of Delaware to renovate
Mitchell Hall in 1993, has received an Award of Merit for the lighting
design of the building from the Illuminating Engineering Society of
North America. The lighting concept provided for a new stage lighting
technical balcony with retractable stairs as a safer and more flexible
alternative to sidewall lighting pods; metal halide indirect
uplighting for general purpose work lighting and classroom use; and an
oculus as the source of light and visual interest in the room. In this
photo, the oculus is defined by a new "necklace of light." Each
fixture rotates up into the accessible oculus for lamp replacement.
The stained glass was replaced, and 16 new 150-watt fixtures were
placed above the glass panels simulating the effect of natural
daylighting from above.
