Office of Women's Affairs announces programs for Sexual Assault
Awareness Week, Sept. 26-29
Sexual Assault Awareness Week is scheduled from Sept. 26-29. As
in past years, the focus of the annual event is to heighten the
awareness of students, faculty and staff about the issues surrounding
sexual assault.
Activities include workshops, dramatic presentations, films and
discussions, and distribution of educational materials.
Prominent expert, author and consultant on sex and communication,
Dr. Andrea Parrot, who has appeared on Good Morning America, CBS This
Morning, Larry King Live and Face the Nation will present one of the
highlighted lectures of the week, "Sex: How to Get What You Want but
Not More Than You Bargained For," at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 28, in
Pearson Hall.
Of particular interest to staff may be the three luncheon
programs offered on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday in the Perkins
Student Center.
Monday's program, "What We Should Know and What We Can Do about
Abusive Relationships" will be held from noon-1 p.m., Sept. 26, in the
Ewing Room. Mary Davis, counselor from the battered women's shelter of
Child Inc., and Carol Post, program coordinator of the Victim Advocacy
Program, a domestic violence project at Family Court, will offer
suggestions on how to recognize signs of abuse and where to go for
help.
From noon-1 p.m.,Tuesday, Sept. 27, in the Rodney Room, Trooper
Pam Marshack of the Delaware State Police will present a program on
personal safety, including common-sense tips to help men and women
avoid being victims of sexual assault.
The film, Campus Rape, will be shown during a program from 12:10
to 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 29, in the Ewing Room. This video
depicts several acquaintance/date rape scenarios and addresses
prevention and ways to work to reduce the incidence of these crimes. A
discussion led by members of the Sexual Offense Support Group (SOS)
will follow.
Other programs throughout the week will address such issues as
different perspectives on rape within multiracial communities, the
legal system's response to sexual assault, sexual harassment and the
campus judicial system.
