FOR ALL UNIVERSITY EMPLOYEES
Defensive Driving
The eight-hour presentation of the National Safety Council's
Driver Improvement Program includes crash-avoidance techniques, rules
of the road and safe driving practices. Completion of the program by
Delaware residents results in a three-point credit added to your
driving record and an insurance discount (minimum of 10 percent each
year) on the liability portion of your insurance for three years upon
completing the course. Topics will include various crash-avoidance
techniques based on the standard accident prevention formula of
professional drivers.
NOTE: There is a $20 fee for this class. NO TELEPHONE
REGISTRATION WILL BE ACCEPTED. Registration must be made by campus or
U.S. mail and accompanied by a check, payable to "Delaware Safety

Advanced Defensive Driving
"Coaching the Experienced Driver" is for those with several years
of driving experience but who may need to freshen up their driving
skills. Through films, slides, discussion and individual work, the
program gives the driver important cues that can be used in daily
driving to reduce the number of near misses or actual accidents.
Employees who complete the program receive a 15 percent discount on
their insurance (not in addition to the 10 percent from basic
Defensive Driving).
NOTE: There is a $15 fee for this class. NO TELEPHONE
REGISTRATION WILL BE ACCEPTED. Registration must be made by mail and
accompanied by a check, made payable to "Delaware Safety Council."

Organization of the University
Career development at the University requires extensive knowledge
of how the various units within the institution fit together. Learn
what different departments do, how they relate to one another and
their academic and administrative reporting lines. This is also an
excellent program for new employees to get acquainted with how the
University is organized.

FOR SALARIED STAFF ONLY
Salaried Staff Career Development Certificate Program
This is a six-part series for salaried staff highlighting a
systematic approach for assessing interest in career development and
formulating strategies to achieve those goals. Utilizing resources
available through the Office of Employee Services and other University
departments, participants will explore the steps involved in creating
a personalized plan for career enrichment. Those attending all
sessions will receive a certificate of completion. See descriptions
that follow for details on each session.
Seminar 1: Introduction to Career Planning
Introduces salaried staff to the career planning process and
acquaints them with the information, resources and support
available.
Seminar 2: Resume Writing
Discusses various types of resumes and provides guidelines on
resume content and format. Participants will receive personal
assistance with writing or revising their resume.
Seminar 3: Overview of Classification System and Career Matrices
Provides information on the Salaried Staff Classification System
including steps involved in reclassifying an existing position.
Salaried staff career matrices will be reviewed to denote
education and experience required for advancement.
Seminar 4: UD Educational Benefits
Panel presentation with representatives from Employee Relations,
Computing and Network Services, continuing education and
admissions providing information on credit/non-credit classes and
certificate programs available to salaried staff. Will include a
review of the application process for course fee waiver, tuition
remission and cooperative tuition exchange.
Seminar 5: The Employment Process /Interviewing Tips and
Techniques
Acquaints salaried staff with the employment process at the
University. Provides information on preparing for interviews.
Seminar 6: Goal Setting/ Wrap-Up
Acquaints salaried staff with use of the new Performance
Appraisal Form as a career planning tool. Discusses importance of
goal setting to achieve career advancement and stresses
availability of individual career counseling through the Career
Resource Center.
Introduction to University Forms and Recordkeeping
Designed for salaried staff who work with common University
forms. Through completion of various in-class exercises, participants
will create a reference manual for their professional use.

Mastering Correct English
A four session workshop to improve basic knowledge of grammar,
punctuation, sentence structure and English usage.

FOR PROFESSIONAL STAFF ONLY
Writing With Confidence
This two-part course is designed for managers who regularly write
memos, letters, reports, etc. In addition to reviewing some grammar
and punctuation issues, the course will focus on effective writing
techniques-including determining the audience, keeping the reader
interested, generating accurate information, choosing the appropriate
style, staying on the subject, building confidence and writing
concisely.

FOR SUPERVISORY STAFF ONLY
Supervisor's Orientation to U.D. Personnel Policies and Procedures
Particularly beneficial for the new supervisor of professional
and salaried staff, this workshop presents an overview of the contents
of the Personnel Policies and Procedures Handbook and the function of
the Employee Relations Office.

Introduction to Supervision
This program is for new supervisors with less than one year of
experience and those preparing to move into a supervising position
within six months. Employees will examine how the supervisory role
differs from a non-supervisory position, the effects of personal power
vs. positional power, the importance of self-development and
networking activities to growth as a supervisor.

Setting Standards and Objectives
This program teaches supervisors how to establish measurable,
achievable standards to provide employees with performance direction,
criteria for evaluation and opportunities for development.
Participants will develop a system for monitoring performance in a
fair and accurate manner. During training, participants will choose
whether to write standards or objectives, depending on the job
description they bring for in-class practice exercises.

Communicating Standards and Objectives
This companion program to Setting Standards and Objectives
addresses the discussion between the supervisor and the employee. The
training program provides practice opportunities for supervisors to
ensure their employee understands and/or agrees with the performance
criteria that will be used to evaluate her or him. Participants must
have attended Setting Standards and Objectives and should bring their
completed worksheets from that class.

ADA Seminars
In 1990, Congress enacted the Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA) that prohibits discrimination against individuals with
disabilities in employment, public transportation, telecommunications
and access to public programs and services. This includes access to
public and private college and university programs and services. The
Employee Services staff, in conjunction with the ADA coordinator, is
offering a seminar to inform you of the ADA's employment provisions.
Discussion will focus on employment-related issues, such as hiring,
promotion, pay, benefits, layoffs and assignments. In addition, recent
interpretation of the "reasonable accommodation" aspect of ADA will be
discussed.
