Carmelita to open for Neville Bros.
Wilmington's own Carmelita will be the opening act for the
upcoming concert at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 13, in the Bob Carpenter
Center with the Neville Brothers, featuring Aaron Neville.
Tickets for the concert-at $20 for the general public, $10 for
full-time UD undergraduates with ID and $15 for other members of the
University community with ID-are now on sale in Newark at the box
offices at the Bob Carpenter Center and at the Perkins Student Center,
located on Academy Street. Tickets also are available by phone through
Ticketmaster, telephone 984-2000. A convenience charge may apply.
Carmelita began her career in Wilmington in 1989. Since then, she
has toured as a background vocalist with Patti LaBelle and has
performed with such artists as Take 6, Carl Andersen, Roberta Flack
and Ray Baretta. In 1992, she performed at one of the presidential
inaugural celebrations in Washington, D.C., and last year her
performance at the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival earned her a
reputation as Wilmington's favorite jazz diva. When not performing,
she is an HIV specialist for a local medical center.
Mixing the world's tightest harmonies with the cultural richness
of their native New Orleans, the Neville Brothers have a unique sound
featuring the best of pop, jazz and rhythm and blues. Since the 1960s
hit "Tell It Like It Is," the Neville Brothers have been renowned for
the spirit of their concerts, which is captured on the band's current
album Live on Planet Earth.
In addition to singing with the group, Aaron Neville has won
acclaim in the pop and country fields for his solo recordings and for
his duets with such artists as Linda Ronstadt.
