On campus cable; Student Life TV channel to premiere on Feb. 13
Toga Talk, BH1, Connections and Have You Heard are a few of the
shows on the University's new Student Life Television-SLTV-49, which
begins Feb. 13.
According to Charlene Jaeger, assistant to the vice president for
student life, the new channel, which will air innovative programming
over the University's cable system, is an effort by the Division of
Student Life to provide UD students with programming that is both
entertaining and informational.
"SLTV will be experimenting with a variety of programs and
schedules during our pilot phase this spring," Jaeger said.
"As partners with SLTV, students will frequently be asked for
input on the types of program offered on Channel 49. It will only be
through students' energized feedback that SLTV will keep programming
lively and reality based," Jaeger said.
SLTV-49 will be seen on campus televisions in residence halls and
in such central locations as the Hen Zone and the Scrounge. During the
spring semester, the Division of Student Life also will be working to
identify additional locations where SLTV can be viewed by commuter
students.
To get the right mix of programming, SLTV-49 personnel sought
advice from other universities that operate campus channels aimed at a
college-aged audience.
Contacts, Jaeger said, were made with institutions such as New
York, Colorado State and Drexel universities, the universities of
Arkansas, North Carolina and Iowa and several colleges in the State
University of New York system.
Four members of the SLTV team, including Alexander Doberenz,
interim vice president for student life, visited the TV facilities at
NYU.
"The University of Delaware's Media Services Department has
outstanding technical staff and facilities to transmit SLTV
programming," Doberenz said. "By teaming UD facilities and staff with
our enthusiastic student technicians, we hope to produce top-quality
shows."
Visits to other campuses also are planned this spring as the SLTV
team develops plans for next year's programs.
In addition to college contacts, Doberenz and Jaeger have been in
touch with individuals at CBS-TV in New York City and, locally, with
WHYY-TV.
"The long-range vision for SLTV broadens with each contact,"
Jaeger said. "Our plan is for the University of Delaware to be a
national leader in campus programming."
Jaeger added that the success of SLTV depends upon student input.
After the new channel is on the air for a few weeks, students will be
asked to evaluate SLTV programming.
"Student feedback regarding SLTV programming and scheduling is
vital to long-range planning," Jaeger said. "When students are asked
their opinion of SLTV programming, we hope they will take the time to
participate in the evaluation."
