Main St. parking garage opens

The new Main Street parking garage, located at the west end of
Main Street, opened Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 7. The facility offers
both gate-controlled parking for employees and a pay-to-park rate for
employees, students and visitors.
     Hours of operation are 7 a.m.-6 p.m., Mondays-Fridays, at 50
cents per half hour; and 6-11 p.m., Mondays-Fridays, at 25 cents per
half hour, to a maximum of $2 for the evening. There will be no
overnight parking.
Initially, the garage will be closed Saturdays and Sundays,
except during special University events. However, weekend hours will
be adjusted as needed, and the garage is scheduled to be open during
weekends when the new student center is completed.
According to Public Safety officials, parking for employees is
available at the gated-lot rate and offers card holders a guaranteed
space, convenience and the added security of an attendant.
For an introductory bargain rate of only $2.29 more per pay
period, current gold decal holders using payroll deduction are invited
to upgrade their parking status to the garage lot. The offer is valid
through September. Total per pay for parking would be $10.
Those interested in upgrading to a gold permit and taking
advantage of the gate-controlled offer should visit the garage office.
Registration changes may be made at that location during business
hours through the month of February. To do so, employees must bring
the current permit and an ID card.
An information flier, with a "free parking" coupon, is being
distributed to employees who work in the general area of the garage.
The offer provides for one free visit to the parking garage.
The garage also offers parking on a cash or flex-payment basis.
Departments may offer garage parking to their guests and visitors
through a validation system.
The garage has 575 spaces. With its opening, visitor parking
passes will no longer be valid for Lot 19 on North College Avenue.
