Brecht's 'Mother Courage' to begin Feb. 17 in Hartshorn
The Professional Theatre Training Program (PTTP) will open its
run of Mother Courage and Her Children on Friday, Feb. 17, at 7:30
p.m. in Hartshorn Hall.
Brechtian authority and international director Heinz-Uwe Haus
will return to PTTP to stage Brecht's tale of unrelenting survival.
The character of Mother Courage plods painfully but ruthlessly along,
caring only for her day-to-day continuance while her children,
daredevil Eilif, the honest Swiss Cheese and the mute Katrin fall, one
by one, to wartime violence in one of Brecht's most provocative
pieces.
One of the performances, a matinee on Saturday, Feb. 25,
coincides with the Bertolt Brecht Symposium, being held that day on
the Newark campus. The symposium, dedicated to the memory of the late
University Prof. Hans-Peter Breuer, begins at 9 a.m. in 110 Memorial
Hall.
Guy Stern, distinguished professor of German at Wayne State
University and author, will deliver the keynote address at 9:30 a.m.,
followed by a panel discussion featuring directors and scholars. Lunch
will be served at 12:15 p.m. in the Blue and Gold Club, followed by
the 2 p.m. performance of Mother Courage.
A 4:45 p.m. post-performance discussion with the cast concludes
the symposium, which also is sponsored by the University's College of
Arts and Science, the departments of Foreign Languages and Literatures
and English, PTTP and the University Faculty Senate Committee on
Cultural Activities and Public Events.
