Office of Women's Affairs to sponsor annual film series

The Office of Women's Affairs is offering the "Women's
History/Women's Lives" film series. In its ninth year, the series
presents films that focus on historical and social issues affecting
the lives of women. The films-all of which will be presented at 7 p.m.
in 100 Kirkbride Lecture Hall-are selected to illustrate both national
and international issues and diversity among women. Speakers will
address the issues raised in the films and discussions follow each
film.

Fire Eyes
Without sensationalism, this film explores the custom of female
genital mutilation, its origins and its current forms. Produced by an
African woman, and featuring interviews with both women and men, Fire
Eyes sheds light on an ancient practice and raises important questions
about its continuance in the modern world.
     Date: Tuesday, Feb. 21
     Speaker: To be announced

In The Game
A winning coach, an undefeated team, a national basketball
championship. It sounds like a familiar success story. But, when the
coach and players are women, what does success mean? Come to cheer for
some outstanding athletes and to think about the issues their stories
raise.
     Date: Tuesday, Feb. 28
Speakers: Barbara Kelly, professor, physical education; Mary Ann
Hitchens, associate director, Intercollegiate Athletics; and
        others to be announced.

Homeless Women
This film shatters any images the term may bring to mind. It
follows the life of six women without homes, all of whom are educated,
articulate and well-groomed, all of whom were once middle class. These
women challenge our notions of who can feel secure in our society.
     Date: Tuesday, March 7
Speaker: Rev. Elisa Diller, formerly staff to council, Inter-
        Agency Council on the Homeless

Out in Suburbia
This honest and revealing documentary dispels stereotypes about
lesbians in modern America. Eleven women discuss their everyday lives
in local neighborhoods, covering issues ranging from marriage and
motherhood to discrimination and female roles.
     Date: Tuesday, March 14
Speaker: Catherine Simile, Women's Studies Interdisciplinary
Program and chair of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Concerns
        Caucus

Ripples of Change
During the 1970s, Japanese women participated in a movement they
termed "woman lib," a counterpart to feminist activism in the West. By
searching out the stories of women who participated in "woman lib,"
this film presents a fascinating and surprisingly varied portrait of
women in contemporary Japan.
     Date: Tuesday, March 21
Speaker: Denise O'Brien, Dept of Anthropology, Temple University

This film series is sponsored by the Black American Studies
Program, Faculty Senate Committee on Cultural Activities and Public
Events, Department of History, Office of Women's Affairs, Department
of Sociology and Women's Studies Interdisciplinary Program.
