Campus wallet theft update
One of the female suspects, whose photograph appeared in a Crime
Alert published in the Jan. 19 issue of UpDate, was apprehended by a
University police officer who observed the woman near the Perkins
Student Center. She was taken into custody, and stolen identification
cards and checks linking her to some of the previous thefts were found
in her possession.
In that notice, Public Safety requested assistance from the
campus community in identifying persons thought to be responsible for
wallet thefts occurring in academic and administrative
buildings-including DuPont and Evans halls, Lammot DuPont, Brown and
Sharp laboratories and the Willard Hall Education Building.
The woman's accomplice, described as a female, in her mid 20s,
5'2", stocky and with Asian features, with long black hair and bangs,
has not yet been identified or apprehended.
According to University Police, the female subject described
above may still be operating in the area and may be accompanied by a
white male, 20-25, 5'11"-6', 170-180 lbs., with short dark hair; or a
black male, 6', 180 lbs.
These two males have been linked to thefts by witnesses and
through the purchase of items in stores using stolen credit cards.
The method employed by the suspects is to wander around a
building, looking for open offices and unlocked desks. If confronted,
they ask for some fictitious person in the building.
Employees are asked to notify University Police immediately, at
831-2222, if anyone matching these descriptions is observed, or if
anyone is seen acting in this unusual manner.
Employees are urged always to place valuables in a secured
desk/closet and to lock offices when they are left unattended.
In the previous Crime Alert, the suspect was described as Filipino or
Indonesian, based on descriptions offered by witnesses who had come
into contact with her. This reference to national origin has offended
members of the Indonesian and Filipino communities. UpDate regrets
that this unintentional offense has occurred.
