Day of Celebration in BCC Jan. 16

     The University and the DuPont Co. are co-sponsoring "A Day of
Celebration" in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 9 a.m., Monday,
Jan. 16, with a program in the Bob Carpenter Center.
     William Raspberry, Washington Post Pulitzer Prize-winning
syndicated columnist, is the featured speaker. The University of
Delaware Gospel Choir will perform.
     Admission is free and family and friends of University employees
are welcome to attend. Tickets are available at the information desk
in the Perkins Student Center, at the Center for Black Culture, in
rooms 124 and 305 Hullihen Hall and at the Bob Carpenter Center ticket
office.


Public service programs
     The life, writings and speeches of Martin Luther King Jr. will be
commemorated in a series of 12 public service announcements sponsored
by the Delaware Human Relations Commission and the University's Black
American Studies Program, as part of the observance of King's
birthday, Jan. 16.
     Written by Carole Marks, director of the Black American Studies
Program, and produced by Barbara Garrison, editor in public relations,
the short features are read by University President David P. Roselle;
Margaret Andersen, vice provost for academic affairs; Mary Richards,
dean of the College of Arts and Science; Judith Gibson, assistant vice
president of affirmative action and multicultural programs; Bill
Lawson, chairperson of philosophy; from the Black American Studies
Program, Howard Johnson, associate professor; James Newton, professor;
and Marks; and from the Delaware Human Relations Commission, Andrew
Turner, director; Aida Waserstein, chairperson; and members Christine
Kraft and Annabelle Kressman.
     The 60-second segments will air on local radio stations in honor
of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. For example, WDEL-1150 am, will feature
one at 7:55 a.m. everyday from Jan. 16-21 and at other times during
that period.
