U.N. at 50 topic of lecture series
"The United Nations at 50" is the topic of a lecture series
scheduled this month on campus. All the talks, free and open to the
public, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Room 125 of Clayton Hall.
The series opens on Monday, Jan. 9, with LeRoy Bennett, professor
emeritus of political science and international relations at the
University, who will speak on "The Changing United Nations: A 50-Year
Retrospective."
On Thursday, Jan. 12, Felice D. Gaer, director of the Jacob
Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights, will speak on
"The United Nations and Human Rights."
Ivo Daalder, director of the Research Center for International
Security Studies at the University of Maryland, will speak on Tuesday,
Jan. 17 on "The United Nations and Arms Control at the End of the 21st
Century."
On Thursday, Jan. 19, William J. Durch, senior associate at the
Henry L. Stimson Center, will discuss "Flying Boutroses: Thoughts on
the Future Architecture of Collective Security."
Michael Stopford, director of the United Nations Information
Center, will talk on "The Limits of Intervention" on Monday, Jan. 23.
And the series wil conclude on Monday, Jan. 30, with John
Renninger, deputy director of the European Division of the United
Nations Department of Political Affairs, speaking on "The U.N. and the
New World Order."
The series is co-sponsored by the Department of Political Science
and International Relations, the Office of International Programs and
Special Sessions and the World Affairs Council of Wilmington.
The lectures are offered in conjunction with a course, "Seminar
in World Politics," taught by James K. Oliver, political science and
