Former board chairman named trustee emeritus
J Bruce Bredin, a member of the University's Board of Trustees
for 37 years and chairman from 1982-1988, was honored with a special
resolution Tuesday on his retirement from the board, and the trustees
elected him trustee emeritus.
A member of the board since 1957, Bredin has chaired the
Executive Committee, the Honorary Degrees and Awards Committee and the
Arts and Humanities Committee and has served on the committees on
Grounds and Buildings, Student Personnel Services and Welfare,
Education and Training, Nominating and Physical Education, Athletics
and Recreation.
In 1991, he was awarded an honorary degree from the University,
in recognition of his "dedication to higher education and his
stewardship of the University of Delaware."
The resolution at the board's semiannual meeting saluted Bredin
for playing "a vital role in maintaining the University as an
institution known and respected for quality and innovation" and noted
that, during his chairmanship, "he sustained and strengtheneed the
University through periods of enormous growth and change."
The resolution also characterized him as "an elegant friend and
benefactor of the University of Delaware, [whose] generosity to, and
support of, the institution are legendary."
The resolution passed with a standing ovation from the board.
