Board of Trustees approves several building projects

     The University of Delaware Board of Trustees authorized the
administration to proceed with several building projects, all subject
to available funds, at its regular semiannual meeting Dec. 13 in
Clayton Hall.
     These projects include the agricultural biotechnology center,
with a funding commitment expected from the Delmarva poultry and
allied industries; renovation of Recitation Hall and Annex, subject to
discussion with the board's Architecture Visiting Committee;
replacement of the elevator in Christiana East residence hall; and
construction of a Dover office building.
     The trustees also passed resolutions:
        * confirming the University's FY 1996 capital funds request to
          the state;
        * requesting the administration to proceed with the bidding of
          travel services to identify one or more travel agencies to
          handle University travel, with the goal of providing
          satisfactory travel arrangements at lower cost and greater
          efficiency in processing reimbursements;
        * expressing support for efforts in Newark to relieve the
          severe traffic congestion in the center of the city and
          promote safety;
        * congratulating the coaches and members of the women's fall
          sports teams for their winning seasons and for sweeping the
          Coach of the Year awards in their respective sports in the
          North Atlantic Conference, the first time one school has won
          all the awards in the conference's history; and
        * authorizing the president to confer degrees at Commencement,
          Jan. 7.

     In other action, the board approved Howard Cosgrove as a new vice
chairman, replacing Edward Jefferson, and approved an additional three-
year term for Jefferson.
     The board also appointed a new trustee to a six-year term: Donald
R. Brunner, senior vice president of J.P. Morgan & Co. Inc., the
parent company of Morgan Guaranty Trust Co. A 1966 UD alumnus, Brunner
served as a member of the search committee to select the College of
Business and Economics' current dean and currently chairs the Business
and Economics Visiting Committee. In 1993, he received the college's
Alumni Award of Excellence.
     University President David P. Roselle told the trustees the year
is going well. He noted that 175 applications have been received in
the search for a new vice president for student life, which should be
concluded in the spring. Roselle said campus construction projects are
on or ahead of schedule, a program to upgrade faculty computer
technology is under way, gifts to the University are in excess of $10
million, grant income is ahead of where it was a year ago and the
University's interaction with the state is going well.
     He also said the University had received a prestigious national
honor-the CAUSE Award for Excellence in Campus Networking, and Carl
Jacobson, director of Management Information Services in Information
Technologies, gave the trustees a multimedia look at the capabilities
of the University's award-winning network.
