Holiday reminders
As you make preparations for a busy holiday season, the following
suggestions will help manage your office during the time you are away
and help you start the new year off right.
Voice mail
Change your voice mail greeting to reflect that the University is
closed over the holiday. Also, be sure to mark the holiday greeting as
an "extended absence" greeting. That way, the system will remind you
to change your greeting after the holiday.
E-mail
On the UNIX system, you are able to turn on the "vacation"
feature that automatically informs people who send you mail that you
will not be reading your mail until you return. To turn the feature
on, at the UNIX prompt, type:
vacation
and follow the prompts.
If you subscribe to mailing lists, you may want to temporarily
unsubscribe to prevent your vacation message from being sent to the
lists. Temporarily unsubscribing also will keep your mailbox from
filling up with numerous messages from the lists during the time you
are away. Check with the administrators of your mailing lists if you
have any questions about unsubscribing over the holiday.
If you have any questions about using the vacation feature, call
the Help Desk at 831-6000.
In EMC2, you can use the "Auto-reply message" feature.
Select P-Personal Configuration from the Main Mail Menu.
Select "Auto reply message."
Type in the message you want to send in response to incoming
mail. The message cannot exceed 44 characters. For example:
I am away until 1/3/95.
Press RETURN. Press PF2 to exit.
To turn the feature off when you return, simply type blank
spaces over the message and press RETURN.
Passwords
Begin the new year with a new password. You should periodically
change your password for security. Use the entire range of characters
available when you select a new password. For example, MVS users can,
and should, use both letters and numbers in their passwords. UNIX
users can, and should, use a mixture of upper- and lower-case letters,
numbers and punctuation marks in their passwords.
Computing classes
Register for a Winter Session User Education class. Before you
leave for the holiday, check out the computing class schedule (UpDate,
Dec. 8). A variety of computing classes are being offered this winter
to help you enhance your computing skills. To register for a class,
call 831-8445 or send e-mail to usered@strauss.udel.edu.
