UD skater wins in competition, attracts international attention
At 12 years old, Tara Lipinski, leads a life much different from
most in her age group. This University of Delaware figure skater has
been winning top honors in national and international competitions.
Called a prodigy by The New York Times, the young skater came in
fourth in the November junior world championships in Budapest where
she was the youngest skater competing. She was number one in the Blue
Swords competition in Germany this fall and also was the youngest
winner at the July Olympics Sports Festival, a competition for the
country's developing athletes.
Ron Ludington, director of the University's Ice Skating
Development Center, calls Lipinski an "exceptional and talented
skater." Her coach is Jeff DiGregorio.
Lipinski also has skated in several exhibitions.
She was one of the skaters in the Jimmy Fund cancer benefit at
Harvard University, which will be shown on PBS later this year. She
also was televised at the Ice Wars in New York and last month appeared
on ABC-TV's Good Morning America.
The young skater and her parents were featured in an article in
The New York Times this fall, in which the University of Delaware was
called "one of a handful of elite training centers in the country."
