     - VISITING LECTURER PROGRAM OF THE CIVIC EDUCATION PROJECT (CEP)
1995-96 (12/15-1)-The Civic Education Program is an international, not-
for-profit organization dedicated to assisting in the revitalization
of the social sciences and strengthening the foundations upon which
democracy can thrive throughout Eastern Europe and the states of the
former Soviet Union. Through its Visiting Lecturer Program, CEP places
more than 125 highly trained Western scholars in teaching and
development positions each year. These lecturers not only teach in the
classroom but engage in a wide variety of outreach and project
development activities. Participants in the Visiting Lecturer Program
spend a year at their host university, teaching social science courses
and working closely with local faculty and their CEP colleagues. All
applicants are encouraged to submit their application materials as

     - SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FELLOWSHIPS IN JAPAN (12/15-2)-The
National Science Foundation (NSF) offers opportunities for research in
Japanese universities, national research institutes and corporate
research facilities. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent
residents. Awards are available for graduate students, postdoctoral
fellows and senior investigators for three- to 24-month research
visits in Japan. For long- and medium-term research, deadline is April
1; for short term visits, deadline is May 15; for dissertation
enhancement, deadline is April 1; for summer institute for graduate
students in science and engineering, deadline is Dec. 1. Awards also
are available for bilateral seminars in Japan or the United States,
deadline is May 15. To apply for these programs, request the program

     - ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIPS IN THE HUMANITIES: PUBLIC
SPHERES AND THE GLOBALIZATION OF MEDIA (12/15-3)-Applications are
being sought from scholars, critics and cultural producers (with
appropriate professional training) involved in theory and practice of
mass media in regional contexts-for Africa, Latin America, Asia,
Europe or North America. Projects involving other regions also will be
considered. The institute anticipates residential awards for a
university fellowship of nine months and several institute fellowships

     - CUBAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE (12/15-4) For 1995-98, the Cuban
Research Institute invites scholars of the humanities to explore
themes of sovereignty, identity and reconciliation in Cuban
intellectual and cultural traditions-central themes of Cuban
humanities scholarship. Applications from scholars researching these
issues in other societies characterized by political divisions or
large diaspora populations also are strongly encouraged. The Cuban
Research Institute, dedicated to creating new knowledge about Cuba and
Cuban-Americans through advanced scholarship and community programs,
is housed at Florida International University, which enrolls the most
students of Cuban origin outside of Havana and has a large number of
faculty specializing in Cuban studies. The institute is linked to an
international network of research institutions and offers visiting
fellows the resources of its faculty, library and the Miami
metropolitan area, home to the nation's largest Cuban-American

     - CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF CULTURE AND DEVELOPMENT IN AFRICA
(12/15-5)- The residency program of the Center for the Study of
Culture and Development in Africa emphasizes the systematic
examination of the various forms of cultural practice in contemporary
Africa: oral narrative performance traditions, written literature and
film, as well as their modes of existence, the dynamics of
interaction-formal as well as thematic- among them and their
significance as crucial components in contemporary discourse on
socioeconomic transformation and development in Africa. The ways in
which these forms of cultural practice engage issues of language,
gender, class, ethnicity, religion and the African environment will be
emphasized. The center encourages applications from scholars in the
humanities and social sciences whose work critically engages and
relates current theories and developments in cultural studies to
issues of human and socioeconomic development in contemporary Africa.
Residencies are normally for a period of 10 months, although
consideration will be given to shorter periods. Deadline is Jan. 31.

     - UNITED STATES INSTITUTE OF PEACE: 1995 SOLICITED GRANTS (12/15-
6)-The United States Institute of Peace is accepting applications for
its annual solicited grant competition. Each year, the institute
offers financial support for research, education and training, and the
dissemination of information in the fields of international peace and
conflict resolution. The topics for the 1995 solicited grants are
international intervention strategies and mechanism to ameliorate
internal conflicts and their effects and negotiation research and
training. The institute encourages application from nonprofit
organizations and official public institutions. Individuals also may

     - SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH COUNCIL: BERLIN PROGRAM FOR ADVANCED
GERMAN AND EUROPEAN STUDIES (12/15-7)-FUNDED BY THE BERLIN GOVERNMENT,
THE VOLKSWAGEN FOUNDATION AND THE GERMAN MARSHALL FUND OF THE UNITEd
States, the program encourages the comparative and interdisciplinary
study of the economic, political and social aspects of modern and
contemporary German and European affairs. The program supports
anthropologists, economists, political scientists, sociologists and
all scholars in germane social science and cultural studies fields,
including historians working on the period since the mid-19th century.
Fellows are expected to produce a research monography (i.e., doctoral
dissertation, book manuscript, etc.) dealing with some aspect of
German or European affairs, including U.S.-European relations. Awards
are for a minimum of nine months and a maximum of 24 months. Citizens
and permanent residents of the United States are eligible. At the
dissertation level, at the time of application, applicants must have
completed all requirements for a doctorate except the dissertation. At
the postdoctoral level, the program is open to scholars who have
received the Ph.D. degree or its equivalent in the last two years.

     - SUMMER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS IN SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION IN
AN ENVIRONMENT OF IMMERSION (12/15-8)- THE MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE Language
Schools invite applications for up to three eight-week summer
fellowships to conduct research in second language acquisition or
applied linguistics. Fellows will live on the Vermont campus during
the 1995 summer session and conduct research on the Middlebury
immersion program in one of the eight language schools. The fellowship
comes with a $3,000 to $5,000 stipend, depending upon the fellow's
experience and the scope of the project. In addition, Middlebury
College will provide room and board for the duration of the
fellowship. Research results will be made available to the language
teaching community at Middlebury and beyond. Fellows will be named on
the basis of the research project, a plan of action, a resume, and at
