Carole Marks new director of Black American Studies

Carole Marks, associate professor in the Department of Sociology
and Black American Studies Program, has been appointed director of the
Black American Studies Program.
In making the announcement, Mary P. Richards, dean of the College
of Arts and Science, said, "Dr. Marks will continue in the tradition
of building a program of scholars of national reputation and has plans
to expand the program's ability to serve as a resource for the
University and the community-at-large."
"Black America is at the heart of this nation's history, its
politics, its social life... The mission of the Black American Studies
Program is to systematically research, analyze and write about this
formative aspect of our society," Marks said.
Marks succeeds James Newton, who has taken on new duties as a
senior fellow in the University's College of Urban Affairs and Public
Planning. Newton will continue his teaching responsibilities in the
program.
Marks has published several articles and made many presentations
in the field of the black underclass and the work of black women. She
is the author of a 1989 book, Farewell, We're Good and Gone: The Great
