Phi Beta Kappa inducts new members

     Phi Beta Kappa inducted 14 new members Nov. 13 at a ceremony in
Clayton Hal. After dinner, Barbara Gates, Alumni Distinguished
Professor of English, made a presentation on "Divining One's Future."
     In her remarks, Gates said, "We who work hard-and I am sure that
each of you has worked very hard to gain the recognition that is yours
today-need to keep mindful of advice like that of my old teacher, who
counseled utter alertness to more than one thing, to backdoors for
knowledge and insights to slip into while we get on with what is at
hand... of divining one's future by maintaining room for change."
     The new members are Amy Kathleen Castelli, English; Denise Marie
Conway, political science and international relations/foreign
languages and literatures; Jana Leigh Cresswell, criminal justice;
Peter Francis Eskin, history; Shannon Dawn Finch, English; Catherine
M. B. Leonard, women's studies/ anthropology; Kircia Marie Maffie,
psychology; Robert Francis O'Reilly, political science and
international relations; Tobias Pinckney, political science and
international relations/ English; Sean MacLeod Quimby,
history/English; Andreen Olivet Soley, psychology/family and community
services; Kate Elizabeth Wartchow, English; Holly Christine Winters,
biological sciences; and Stacey Lynn Wladkowski, biological sciences.
     For more than 200 years, election to Phi Beta Kappa has been
considered a prestigious honor for students who excel in their
academic endeavors.
     The 1994-95 officers of the Alpha of Delaware chapter are Bonnie
Kime Scott, English, president; Burnaby Munson, chemistry and
biochemistry, vice president/secretary; Michael Rewa, English,
treasurer; and George Watson, physics and astronomy, and Robert
Bennett, English, co-chairpersons of the Members in Course Committee.
