ME/U cable network to offer HIRM courses nationwide
The University of Delaware and Mind Extension University (ME/U),
a Jones Education Networks subsidiary, will jointly produce a new
project in distance education: the first national delivery of courses
leading to a bachelor of science degree in hotel, restaurant and
institutional management (HRIM). This will be the first program of its
kind in the hospitality industry.
Through ME/U's cable and satellite television system (a
subsidiary of Jones Education Networks Inc.), more than 25 million
households in this country will have access to University of Delaware
courses. The new program is set to begin in the fall of 1995.
Geared to the needs of working adult students in the hospitality
industry, this program will allow students to complete a UD degree
through videotape and cable delivery of classes, along with two on-
campus summer institutes that will combine coursework with practicum
studies.
Distance learning students will meet the same admissions
standards and the same course requirements as students enrolled in the
on-campus HRIM program, a popular and highly respected four-year
program in the University's College of Human Resources.
Its curriculum includes liberal arts and business courses, as
well as specialized courses in technical applications for hotel and
restaurant industries.
"We are particularly pleased to be involved in this project with
Glenn Jones and Jones Cablevision, since they have demonstrated
extraordinary vision in the use of telecommunications to extend higher
education to working adults," University President David P. Roselle
said.
"As demographics of our country change, the statistical profile
of the average college student is changing, and the University is
changing to accommodate that nontraditional student," he said.
"Furthermore, this initiative is part of our commitment to employ
technology to reach students who are unable to attend traditional
classes on our campus. In fact, the University has long been a leader
in the field of distance education through our College of Nursing. Now
I'm pleased that the Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management
Program is also moving to the top in its field."
"This is a natural fusion of technology with education," Glenn R.
Jones, chairman of Jones Education Networks Inc., said. "It's really
necessary to take the technology tools-mostly electronic tools-of the
21st century and bend them in the service of education and to create a
way to extend the great institutions of America. That's what this is
all about, and we're very excited to be involved with it."
"The mission of ME/U is to make quality education more accessible
to people, by using the latest telecommunications technologies,"
Bernard J. Luskin, president of Jones Education Networks, said.
"Through our new relationship with the University of Delaware, we can
bring its highly regarded HRIM degree within the reach of associates
in the hospitality industry throughout the country."
Mind Extension University (ME/U): The Education Network, a
subsidiary of Jones Education Networks Inc., is the only basic cable
television network devoted to distance education and currently reaches
25 million households in more than 8,500 communities. ME/U works in
conjunction with more than 30 universities and the nation's leading
providers of distance education, offering a broad range of
professional development, skills-based and college-credit programming,
including a choice of eight degree programs, language and cultural
programming, computer literacy classes and programming for personal
enrichment. Additional information on this new program is available by
