On the job
My main responsibility is the feeding and care of the livestock
at the University's Webb Farm. I oversee 65 sheep, 24 beef cattle, 14
horses and 16 pigs. Also, I try to fulfill any of the teaching needs
of the agricultural science professors. There are several classes that
visit the Webb Farm to work with the livestock.
Each morning, I start a routine by checking the animals. Usually,
some problem arises, like a hole in a fence or a malfunction with the
water system. I try my best to correct everything so classes can
continue running as scheduled in a safe manner. My knowledge of the
animals developed from being around them all my life. Both my
grandparents and my aunt had farms. Often, the professors will ask me
to lecture on various subjects. Sometimes, I discuss positive and
negative characteristics to look for in beef cattle. The most
rewarding part of my job is seeing the animals born. In the spring, I
will play a part in 85 new lives coming into the world"
