Conference on commuters Nov. 17
A video conference, "Commuter Students: Who's in the Driver's
Seat?," will be presented from noon-2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 17, in the
Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center.
Offered by the Division of Student Life, the program will include
panelists from across the country, including Arthur Chickering, author
of Commuting vs. Resident Students; Barbara Jacoby, director of the
National Clearinghouse for Commuter Programs; Keith Miser, vice
president for student affairs at Colorado State University; and Walter
Bumpus, president of Brookhaven Community College.
Panelists will discuss topics of interest to both faculty and
students, including such areas as how to get the working student
involved in learning, how to break the car-to-classroom syndrome, what
strategies alleviate the frustrations of faculty toward commuter
students, does student development occur differently for commuter
students, what makes a campus attractive to commuter students and what
credentials can be give for out-of-classroom experiences.
The event is free and open to the public. Attendees are
encouraged to bring their lunch to the program.
