5 art faculty featured in gallery talks
University art professors Anne Krohn Graham and Robert Straight
will deliver a gallery talk from 6-7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 22, in the
University Gallery.
The talk is being presented in conjunction with the Department of
Art exhibition "Faculty Five," a showing of Graham's work in metals,
Straight's paintings and works by three other UD art department
faculty members: Joe Moss, sculpture; Priscilla Smith, photography;
and Stephen Tanis, painting.
Graham, professor and chairperson of metals, has led workshops
and lectured extensively both nationally and internationally. Her work
is found in private and public collections, and she has had several
articles published on various aspects of metalworking.
Her talk, titled "The Shrine as Jewelry: Translations from the
Mind to the Hand," highlights her current series of brooches presented
in the exhibition, which were inspired by her travels to the Far East.
The resulting "shrine" pieces, combination wall pieces and wearable
objects are reminders of her cultural exchange experiences that
represent the concepts of material, simplicity, compactness and
vitality.
In her current work, Graham continues to explore the references
linking design and architecture, expressing the maximum idea with the
minimum object.
Straight, professor of painting, has amassed a distinguished
exhibition record both in solo and group shows, and his work is
represented in public and corporate collections. He has been the
recipient of several guest artist and scholarship honors.
His talk, "Marking Time," will give insights into how he
approaches his work, with an emphasis of his applications on new
possibilities within the currently limited scope of painting. He will
use his work in the display as a basis for discussion.
"Faculty Five" is on display through Friday, Dec. 9. University
Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, and from 1-
