Two students receive awards
Two University students recently received awards. Senior art
history major Amanda Burdan was named recipient of the 1994 William M.
Hiester Manuscript Award. The recognition was given by the Historical
Society of Berks County in Pennsylvania.
The competition is open to writers and historical researchers on
any subject of history pertaining to Reading, Pa. and Berks County,
Pa.
Burdan received a $500 Savings Bond at the October award
ceremony, and her name was inscribed on a memorial plaque. In
addition, her manuscript, entitled "Powwow: The Heart of Healing,"
about Pennsylvania-German folk healing, will be published in the
winter issue of Historical Review magazine.
Michael Gibson, a first-year electrical engineering student from
Havre de Grace, Md., received the Elder Watson Diggs Achievement Award
from the Nu Xi chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.
The award, which is named in honor of one of the fraternity's
founders, is given to an outstanding freshman.
An honor student and athlete who took part in extracurricular
activities and community service while in high school, Gibson
participates in the RISE (Resources to Insure Successful Engineers)
program, the Black Student Union, Each One Reach One mentoring program
and the National Society of Black Engineers. He also is a member of
the track and field team at the University.
