Accent on variety in 1994-95 Performing Arts Series
Cuban jazz, Japanese drums, a classic Cole Porter musical,
acclaimed actor John Amos' solo show and more make up the 1994-95
Performing Arts Series.
The series opens Thursday, Sept. 29, at 8 p.m. in Mitchell Hall
with an appearance by Arturo Sandoval, Cuban jazz trumpeter, who has
received rave reviews wherever he has performed. Sandoval also will
offer master classes at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 28, in the Amy E. du
Pont Music Building on campus and at 7 p.m. in the Christina Cultural
Arts Center in Wilmington.
The Prism Quartet, a sax and MIDI ensemble, will perform next in
the series at 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11, in the Loudis Recital Hall in
the Amy E. du Pont Music Building. Prism will offer a master class at
2:45 p.m., Nov. 11, in the music building.
Ondekoza, Japanese demon drummers, will present music as an
aural, visual and emotional experience for the audience at 8 p.m.,
Tuesday, Nov. 29, in Mitchell Hall. The music is played on bamboo
flutes, string instruments and drums ranging in size from a tom-tom to
a 700-lb. instrument. This appearance is made possible with a grant
from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, in partnership with the
Delaware Division of the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The University's annual Holiday Gala, featuring artists from the
Department of Music, will be held at 3 p.m. and again at 8 p.m. on
Sunday, Dec. 4, in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music
Building.
The Mendelssohn String Quartet-with special guests Bonnie Hampton
and Robert Mann-will present a concert at 8 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 7, in
the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building. Other
January string events include a master class with Hampton at 7:30
p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 4; an open rehearsal with the Mendelssohns and
guests at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 5; a master class with Mann at
7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 6; and an emerging artists concert at 2 p.m.,
Sunday, Jan. 8. All events take place in the Loudis Recital Hall and
are free except the Jan. 7 concert.
The Consort of Musicke, a combination of lute and voices,
continues the Performing Arts Season with an 8 p.m. concert in
Mitchell Hall on Thursday, Feb. 9. This concert is dedicated to the
memory of the late University professors Thomas Calhoun and Robert
King, who researched, reconstructed and compiled the words and music
of The Mistress, originally composed by 17th-century English poet
Abraham Cowley.
Pianist Ruth Laredo, distinguished as one of America's foremost
female pianists, will perform at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 17, in
Mitchell Hall. A master class with Laredo also will be arranged.
Cole Porter's famous Anything Goes will be presented by a
national touring company at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 7, in Mitchell
Hall.
John Amos, the distinguished actor best known for his portrayal
of the adult Kunte Kinte in Roots and for his work in such television
series as Good Times and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, will present his
solo theatrical presentation of Halley's Comet, at 8 p.m., Friday,
April 21. Master classes with Amos will be arranged on April 19 and
20. In Halley's Comet, Amos portrays an 87-year-old-man who is sharing
his life experiences with the comet. The presentation is co-sponsored
by the University's Center for Black Culture and the Culture
Programming Advisory Board and is made possible with a grant from the
Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, in partnership with the Delaware
Division of the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The series concludes with a 2 p.m. performance on Sunday, May 7,
by the Lewitzky Dance Company. Master classes will be arranged on May
5 and 6. The program is made possible by a dance on tour grant from
the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, in partnership with the Delaware
Division of the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
