Former provost to receive award

     R Byron Pipes, president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and
former UD provost, has been selected to receive the University's 1994
Medal of Excellence in Composite Materials.
     The presentation will be made during the University Center for
Composite Materials' 20th anniversary research symposium, held Sept.
20-22 in conjunction with the American Society for Composites ninth
conference, "Composites Science and Technology for the 21st Century."
     Given annually since 1984, the medal honors those who have
achieved outstanding leadership in the composites field and have
maintained scholarly endeavor, invention and/or economic enterprise
over a sustained period of time.
     Pipes joined the UD faculty in 1974, eventually serving as
director for CCM, as dean of the College of Engineering from 1985-1991
and then as University Provost from 1991-93. He was instrumental in
initiating the Univerity-Industry Research Consortium. He co-authored
four books, including Experimental Characterization of Advanced
Composite Materials, edited the Composite Book Series, and has
published extensively in his field.
     Pipes will give the Sept. 22 keynote speech, "Composite Materials
1969-1994: From Mechanics to Manufacturing Science" at the seminar.
Past medal awardees S. W. Tsai of Stanford University, D. Hull of the
University of Liverpool, T. Hayashi of the University of Tokyo and K.
M. Prewo of United Technologies Research Center also will deliver
keynote speeches.
