Psychological Services Center relocates to West Main Street

The Psychological Services Training Center, a mental health facility
for individuals from the University and area community, was moved from
Elliot Hall to 203 West Main St., new quarters specifically renovated with
the center in mind.
The facility is a training site for graduate-level students as well as
a fully accredited mental health clinic, according to its director, Rita
Cohen. Staffed by doctoral students in the clinical psychology program, the
center draws over 300 applicants for its five positions. The students are
supervised by Cohen, professors from the Department of Psychology, and area
professionals.
Kim Champion, a third-year doctoral student from Rochester, N.H.
worked at the center last year. "It's really a great program because we get
to see clients in our second and third years," she said.
Available to faculty, staff and community residents, the center offers
many types of therapy for problems related to anxiety, depression, career
decisions, a personal loss, divorce, family and school. Using different
approaches from behavioral to analytical, the staff provides counseling to
married couples, families and children.
Cohen described the center as, "Just like any other, but we have the
advantage of not being confined to one geographic area. We draw from the
whole community."
Fees for the services are based on a sliding scale, depending on the
number of people in the family and yearly income.
Some sessions can run as little as $2 an hour. "Money should not be an
issue for people to come here," Cohen explained.
One new program is the contracting out of services to local school
districts. The center provides psychological evaluations for children in
kindergarten through 12th grade in the Red Clay and Christina school
districts.
