On campus

I got involved with the Resident Student Association (RSA) freshman
year. I was a representative for Harrington C. I saw it as a way to get
involved with the University. I wasn't that active until the end of the
year, when the newly elected officers were looking for people to be
committee chairs for the next year. I signed up to be the Dining Services
chair and became more involved, soon realizing the close relationship
between RSA and the administration.
"RSA is the governing body for all resident students and the
established link for communication between students and the administration.
There are about 40 representatives, one from each residence hall, who keep
the Executive Cabinet and each other informed about what's going on
throughout campus. Inter Hall Assembly is held every Sunday night in the
Student Center. We provide a variety of services for the students, such as
the Campus Directory, Practical Blue Hen Guidebook, linens, GoodStuff
Boxes, carpets, refrigerator rentals, buses home for breaks, fruitbaskets
and support kits. The proceeds from these sales are used to help finance
hall governments, student organization activities and two scholarships. In
addition, we sponsor events such as Hunger Awareness Dinner, a blood drive
and an event during Alcohol Awareness Week.
"Most mornings I get into the office around 9, listen to the messages
and take care of general office duties. I speak with Dave Butler and
Cynthia Cummings from Housing and Residence Life frequently. I also answer
students' and parents' questions about services we provide. Sometimes, I
have to assure overly concerned parents that their students really can deal
with living away from home and can take care of themselves.
"I'm proud of the things the RSA has accomplished and its role on
campus. I try to encourage students to get involved with our organization,
or other ones, to make them feel responsible for our campus community. The
successes that we've had could only be achieved with the help of other
students volunteering their time and effort. I'm very grateful to the other
officers who have supported RSA.
