On the Job

I've worked on the custodial staff at the University for four years. I
started out on the weekend crew but now work Monday through Friday. This
frees up my weekends so I can spend more time with my family. I'm in the
Rodney Complex, in charge of cleaning all of the floors in Rodney D. My job
includes the bathrooms, hallways and windows, as well as fixing light
fixtures and stripping and waxing the floors.
My father, Frank Kerr Sr., has worked here for 25 years. He's in the
Christiana Towers, with HVAC, but he'll be retiring soon.
I work on a rather tight schedule since we have so much to do each
day, but I try to help out the students when I can. One time, a girl
dropped a necklace in the air conditioning unit. It would have cost her $40
to have someone come up and get it, so I fished it out while I was on
break. I see a lot of what goes on with the students and get a good look at
what they want. That's why the other custodians and I stressed to higher
management the importance of cable installation. We knew that kids weren't
happy looking at fuzzy TV screens.
