     Social science research fellowships in agriculture (10/1-1)-The
Rockefeller Foundation is announcing the continuation of two-year research
fellowships at overseas, agricultural institutions. These fellowships will
be awarded to new Ph.D.s in such fields as economics, agricultural
economics, anthropology, geography, history, or sociology with an interest
in agricultural issues pertaining to international development. Candidates
must have completed their doctoral degree no earlier than January 1989.
Fellows will usually work with senior social and biological scientists.
However, they may be able to design new research projects and create new
professional roles. Fellows will normally be appointed to one of the
international agricultural research institutes. Application deadline for
the 1994 competition is Dec. 31, 1993. It is unlikely that any fellowships
will be awarded before June 1994. However, applicants will be notified in

     Research opportunities in Japan (10/1-2)-If you are a U.S. scientist
or engineer, the National Science Foundation offers research opportunities
in Japanese organizations. Graduate students, post-doctoral researchers and
senior investigators are eligible to apply for research stays from three to
24 months. Support is provided for international travel, living expenses
and other categories, depending upon the length of the stay in Japan. The

     Fulbright lecturing and research awards to Japan for faculty and
professionals (10/1-3)-The Japan-United States Educational Commission is
still offering Fulbright awards for university lecturing and research in
Japan for September 1994. Support will include a monthly stipend, roundtrip
travel for the grantee (and one dependent for lecturers) and allowances for
housing. Applications will be accepted until Nov. 1. For further

     Kellogg National Fellowship Program (10/1-4)- Fifty fellows will be
awarded a fellowship for the three-year program emphasizing domestic and
global issues. Activities include foundation-sponsored seminars in which
fellows will look at the threats facing organizations and communities.
Additionally, fellows are awarded up to $35,000 each to carry out
non-degree projects. Applications must be submitted by Dec. 15. For further

     Eisenhower Exchange Fellowships (10/1-5)-An international fellowship
will be awarded to a mid-career professional for a one-month professional
program in Taiwan, Turkey or Thailand. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and
must turn in the application by Nov. 30. Program includes travel throughout
the selected country for research/inquiry purposes. Benefits include all
travel and living expenses. Request for an application packet must be in

     The Canada-U.S Fulbright Program (10/1-6)- The Foundation for
Educational Exchange promotes scholarly exchanges for American citizens
engaged in doctoral or final degree programs to enhance the study of Canada
in the U.S., the U.S. in Canada and the relationships between the two
countries. Arts, humanities and social sciences, business administration,
law and journalism majors are encouraged.For further information, contact

     Scholarly exchange program with China, 1994-1995 (10/1-7)-The
Committee on Scholarly Communication with China announces grants for social
scientists and humanists:
     * The research program is open to individuals with a Ph.D. or
equivalent at the time of application, normally requires tenure of two
months to one year between July 1, 1994, and Dec. 31, 1995 (application
deadline is Oct. 16).
     * The graduate program is available to applicants enrolled in a U.S.
graduate program in a Chinese university, minimum tenure of one academic
year beginning September 1994 (deadline is Oct. 16).
     * China Conference travel grants support partial costs of travel to
conferences in the PRC on an aspect of China studies to which applicants
have been invited to present results of recent research between July 1 and
Dec. 31, 1993; do not support travel to lecture, teach or consult. Aid is
paid after conference upon receipt of report (application deadline is Oct.
1 for conferences to take place in December).
     * Chinese Scholarships for Scholarly Development program supports
Chinese scholars in social sciences and humanities with the MA, Ph.D. or
equivalent from a Chinese institution. Applicant must be nominated by
American host and residence must be at host's institution for research and
collaborative academic programs; offers living and modest travel expenses
for one semester (five months) between August 1994 and December 1995; does
not apply to Chinese scholars enrolled in degree program. Application
deadline is Nov. 13.

     Fellowships for dissertation write-up (10/1-8)- Open to advanced
graduate students working toward their Ph.D. Support for dissertation work
is available for up to nine months to full-time students, regardless of
citizenship, enrolled in a U.S. doctoral program. Application deadline is

     JCJS advanced research grants (10/1-9)-The program encourages
traditional research in the humanities and social sciences, as well as
projects that are comparative and contemporary in nature, that have a
long-term applied policy implication or which engage Japan in wider
regional and global debates. Scholars holding a Ph.D. or equivalent, being
U.S. citizens or having lived in the U.S. for at least three consecutive
years at the time of application, are eligible to apply by Dec. 1. For more

     Abe Fellowship Program (10/1-10)-Supports Japanese and American
research professionals with a doctoral-equivalent level of professional
training. Applicants should be interested in conducting research on any one
or more of the following themes: global issues, problems common to advanced
industrial societies and issues that relate to improving U.S.-Japan
relations. Fellowships are available for up to 12 months of full-time
support. Tenure should include residence in the country of research or

     Grants for collaborative research and research planning on East-Asia
(10/1-11)-The Social Science Research Council is soliciting proposals
designed to advance comparative and trans-national research on the
East-Asian region. Topics include the political economy of regional and
subregional integration in East Asia, nationalism and the redefinition of
ethnic identities, all topics related to gender, law and economic
development, among others. Grants will support planning meetings as well as
focused seminars or conferences. Deadline for application is Oct. 15.

     JCJS grants for research planning activities (10/1-12)-Seed grants for
research planning activities are intended to advance research concerning
Japan in the social sciences and humanities on the following subjects:
incorporation and exclusion in society, polity, economy and culture;
orality and literacy; peace and security in East-Asia; and Japan and the
developing world. Deadline for application is Oct. 15 and Feb. 15. Scholars

     Peacework Projects in the Former USSR (10/1-13)-Volunteers are sought
for 30 additional projects by the International Volunteer Programs and
Educational Exchanges. Delegations from the U.S. will live and work with
their counterparts in the host community. Several projects for the spring
and summer 1994 for variable duration (from 11 to 21 days on average) are
included. Students from political, economic and cultural disciplines are

     New fellowship program in the Middle East (10/1-14)-The Social Science
Research Council announces research and training at the graduate and
post-graduate levels in social sciences and humanities in the Middle East.
Pending formal notification from USIA, the following grants are available:
pre-dissertation fellowships for graduate students in the social sciences
and humanities, dissertation fellowships for graduate students in
disciplines under-represented in Middle East studies, dissertation research
fellowships for graduate students in the social sciences and humanities,
post-doctoral grants for scholars in disciplines underrepresented in the
Middle East studies and a program of mid-career skills enrichment
fellowships for tenured faculty. Application deadline should be Dec. 1. For

     Council fellowships and grants for training and research, 1993-1994
(10/1-15)

     International Predissertation Fellowship Program provides 12 months of
support for graduate students at selected universities in the field of
economics, political science, psychology, sociology and other social
sciences in the following countries: Africa (Nov. 1 deadline); Eastern
Europe (Dec. 1 or March 1 deadline); South Asia (Bangladesh, Nov. 1
deadline);, Southeast Asia (Nov. 1 deadline); and Soviet Union and its
successor states (Dec. 1 deadline).

     Dissertation awards provide from nine to 18 months of doctoral
dissertation research in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Near and
Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Western Europe (Nov. 1 deadline);
China, Eastern Europe, Soviet Union (Dec. 1 deadline); and Japan and Korea
(Jan. 1 deadline).

     Other pre-doctoral awards in area research:
     * African Humanities Fellowships at Northwestern University for a
year-long residential seminar. Application deadline is Dec. 17.
     * Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies provides
nine to 24 months of support for comparative and interdisciplinary study of
the social, political and economic aspects of modern German and European
affairs. Deadline date is Feb. 1.
     * East European language training grants support summer training.
Deadline date is March 1.
     * Soviet Union and successor states summer workshops on Soviet
domestic politics and society, sociology and anthropology and Imperial
Russian history. Open to students enrolled in Ph.D. programs  and junior
scholars who received their Ph.D.s after June 1988.

     Advanced research grants for up to one year in the social sciences and
humanities field in Africa, China, Eastern Europe, Japan, Korea, Latin
America and the Caribbean, Near and Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia
and the Soviet Union. Deadline is Dec. 1.

     Other awards to advanced scholars in area research:
     * African Humanities Fellowships support year-long residential seminar

     * Berlin Program for advanced German and European studies supports

     * East European language training grants support summer training in
any East European language in the U.S. or Eastern Europe. Deadline is March 1.
     * Grants for research planning activities in Japan are intended to
advance research concerning Japan in the social sciences and humanities.

     * Grants for research planning activities in Korea are intended to
advance research concerning Korea in the social sciences and humanities.
Application deadline is Nov. 1 and Feb. 1.
     * Soviet Union and successor states program offers summer workshops.

     Institutional awards in area research and training:
     * Eastern Europe institutional grants are made available to support
instruction in Albanian, Bulgarian, Czech, Hungarian, Macedonian, Polish,
Romanian, Serbo-Croatian, Slovak or Slovenian. Deadline, Jan. 15.
     * Soviet Union and its successor states first-year fellowships for
under-represented fields are awarded to university departments. Awards in
1993-94 will be related to sociology, anthropology. Deadline, Dec. 1.
     * Summer language institutes for Russian and Soviet languages program
provides fellowships to students enrolled in language training programs for
the summer of 1994, and financial assistance to teachers enrolled in such
programs. Deadline is Dec. 1.

     Other awards programs at the SSRC:
     * Public Policy Research on Contemporary Hispanic Issues is a summer
workshop on statistical research methods. Workshops will take place at the
Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research at the
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Deadline to be announced.
     * SSRC-MacArthur Foundation Fellowships on Peace and Security in a
Changing World Program offers two-year dissertation and two-year
post-doctoral fellowships supporting research on the implications for
security issues of worldwide cultural, economic, social, and political
changes. Deadline is Dec. 1.

     Fulbright-Hays seminars abroad program (10/1-16)-The Fulbright-Hays
program provides opportunities for qualified U.S. educators to participate
in short-term seminars abroad on topics in the social sciences and the
humanities, or on the language of participating foreign countries such as
Brazil, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Hungary, Poland, India, Indonesia,

     Rockefeller Foundation African dissertation internship award
(10/1-17)-The ADIA offers funding for dissertation field research in
sub-Saharan Africa. This program is open to African doctoral students
enrolled in U.S. and Canadian universities. Priority will be given to
research topics in the areas of agriculture, health, life sciences,
environment and schooling. Application material must be turned in by March
