Convocation schedule Aug. 29
Members of the class of 1998 and transfer students of the classes
of 1995-97 will receive a formal welcome to campus at 4 p.m., Monday,
Aug. 29, at New Student Convocation.
This year's ceremonies will be held on the South Mall to
commemorate the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Women's
College, which was located there.
Melvyn Schiavelli, who joined the campus community as University
provost on July 1, will address the students and their guests.
The program also will include the presentation of an honorary
doctor of humane letters degree that will be conferred on Hanna
Holborn Gray, an advocate for higher education who recently retired
after 15 years as president of the University of Chicago. From 1972-
74, she was dean of the College of Arts and Science at Northwestern
University and subsequently was provost and acting president at Yale
University. She will return to teaching history at the University of
Chicago.
Continuing a University tradition, representatives of the class
of 1948--who arrived on campus 50 years ago in the fall of 1944--will
present a freshman class delegate with a class of 1998 flag.
Deans will wear academic regalia during the program. Chairpersons
and faculty are encouraged to do the same. A dinner on the South Mall
will follow the one-hour ceremony.
In the event of rain, the program for undeclared students will be
held in Mitchell Hall. Other colleges are preparing appropriate rain
site plans.
All members of the University community are invited to
participate in the event and join new students and their friends and
relatives at the post-ceremony dinner. However, those planning to
attend are asked to contact Joanne Forestell in the admissions office
by Aug. 24 to make reservations.
For additional information, call Forestell or Sharon Door at
831-6331.
