Ph.D. candidate named fellow

     Susan Stabile, a doctoral candidate in English, has been named
one of four early American studies fellows by the Philadelphia Center
for Early American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. She will
receive a dissertation fellowship, participate in the scholarly
activities of the center and give a public lecture in 1995.
     Her dissertation is on women poets in Philadelphia from 1760-
1820. Stabile is using unpublished manuscript letters, journals and
verse to reconstruct this literary sorority and carrying out research
at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the American Philosophical
Society and the Library Co. of Philadelphia.
     Her adviser is J. A. Leo Lemay, Winterthur Professor of English.
