Summer institute; Kiev visitors experience academic, community life

For the fourth year, MBA candidates from the International
Management Institute in Kiev are attending the Summer International
Business Institute (SIBI) at the University for an intensive course in
business, economics and business English.
According to Scott Stevens, director of the English Language
Institute, the session began July10 and runs through Sept. 2, with 28
Ukrainians participating.
This year's theme is "Entrepreneurship and Small Business
Development," according to academic coordinator June Quigley. The
group is working closely with Clinton Tynes, director, and John
Osoinach, business analyst, both with the Small Business Development
Center on campus.
After their coursework is completed, the students will spend two
weeks visiting area corporations and businesses. Six students will
have month-long internships with business and industry, including one
with the Small Business Development Center and another at the Delaware
Development Office. Upon their return, the six interns will spearhead
a Small Business Development Center at IMI in Kiev.
The students all serve in middle to top-management positions in
Kiev, working in such areas as banking, trade, agriculture,
aeronautics, ship production and energy, Quigley said. On campus, the
group is studying such topics as business practices, joint ventures
and marketing as well as taking business English courses.
One of the concepts also emphasized is the importance of
philanthropy-the business sector giving back to the community that
supports it, Stevens said.
In addition to coursework, the Ukrainian business group will
visit Washington, D.C., and other cities and landmarks of interest in
the area, attend a Blue Rocks baseball game and participate in other
American-style social gatherings.
The summer institute also provides on-site seminars and English
training at the students' home institution in Kiev, and Quigley has
just returned from a seven-week stay there, her third such visit.
Another session of SIBI, coordinated by Leslie Criston, will be
held July 25-Aug. 19 for 11 students from Saudi Arabia, Korea, Japan,
Ecuador and the Czech and Slovak republics.
Funded by the U.S. Information Agency and private sources, SIBI
is managed by the English Language Institute of the Office of
International Programs and Special Sessions, in cooperation with the
College of Business and Economics.
