Elderhostel sessions scheduled in late July at Virden Center
The University will hold an Elderhostel program from July 24-29
at the Virden Conference Center, located on the Hugh R. Sharp Campus
in Lewes.
The session-open to those age 60 or older, as well as their
younger spouses or companions who are at least 50-will includes
courses on "You and the Civil War: Drama, Drill and Your
Ancestors-Yanks or Rebs in the Woodpile?," "Recovering Our Buried
Past-Shipwrecks and Treasures of the Delmarva Coast" and "The First
Town in the First State-Lewes Lore from Whorekill to Cape Henlopen."
Tuition is $310 and includes all meals, on-site lodgings,
classes, course-related field trips and extracurricular activities,
such as tours of the College of Marine Studies, the Zwaanendael Museum
and the DelRiver oil skimmer, as well as programs by Bill Earl's Men's
Community Chorus and Hazel Brittingham on "The History of Lewes."
Group size is limited to 50.
"Some of the highlights of our Elderhostel program include
students actually doing Civil War-era marching drills, a visit to
local beaches to look for treasure and a walking tour of historic
Lewes," Michael Mulrine, Virden Center program coordinator, said.
Founded in 1975, Elderhostel is an international, non-profit
organization that provides learning adventures for older adults at
more than 1,900 educational and cultural institutions throughout the
U.S. and Canada and in 47 countries overseas. The University of
Delaware has been a part of the Elderhostel network since 1990.
There are no educational requirements for participating in
Elderhostel. All that's needed is an open, inquisitive mind and the
desire to share ideas and make friends with like-minded peers from all
walks of life.
The courses, which are on subjects from the broad realm of the
liberal arts and sciences, are free of homework, exams, grades or
credits because, according to the organization's philosophy, learning
should be for its own sake and for the personal enjoyment and
enrichment of the individual.
