Daugherty Hall construction

Construction of the University of Delaware's new student center,
located at the corner of South College Avenue and Main Street in
Newark, is proceeding on schedule.
Removal of the rear portion of Daugherty Hall, part of the Old
Presbyterian Church, began July 18 and is expected to be completed by
mid-August.
Stained-glass windows taken from this section of the building
will be made available to the Presbyterian Church for relocation to
another site.
The $21.3 million student center, designed by internationally
known architects Venturi, Scott Brown & Associates of Philadelphia,
will include a two-story atrium walkway, a food court, theatre,
lounges, an annex to the bookstore, quick copy and mail services, a
multipurpose room and other meeting rooms and offices.
The original portion of Daugherty Hall, formerly a church built
in 1872, is featured as a dominant element in the design, and it will
be restored as a lounge and special event space.
A 600-car parking garage just west of the new student center is
expected to be completed by April 1995, and the student center is
scheduled for completion in the spring of 1996.
Funding for the project is being provided by a bond issue, gifts
and institutional funds. Bonds will be repaid through a combination of
student center fees and revenues from Dining Services, parking and the
University Bookstore.
The Perkins Student Center, located on Academy Street, was built
in 1958, when there were fewer than 2,500 undergraduates on the
campus.
This fall, enrollment of undergraduates is expected to be more
than 14,600.
