Up and coming

Sol y Canto Trio to perform July 13 in Bacchus Theatre
The Sol y Canto Trio, known for playing traditional Caribbean and
South American melodies and rhythms on original combinations of
instruments, will bring its sparkling, spicy sounds to the University
at 8 p.m.,Wednesday, July 13, in the Bacchus Theatre of the Perkins
Student Center. Tickets are $5 at the door.
Sol y Canto is composed of Rosi Straijer-Amador, her husband
Brian Folkins-Amador and their friend, Eugenio Huanca.
Straijer-Amador is the lead vocalist whose clear voice, sparkling
personality and spicy percussion playing combine to transport the
listener to sunny Caribbean beaches, breathtaking Andean vistas and
the lonely Colombian plains.
Trained as a classical soprano for l0 years, she inherited her
love of Latin music from her Argentine father and Puerto Rican mother,
both of whom were professional entertainers.
Folkins-Amador is originally from New Mexico. He studied
classical and flamenco guitar from the age of 12 in Albuquerque, San
Francisco, Madrid and finally in Boston, where he graduated from the
New England Conservatory of Music in 1984.
Audience members thrill as his nimble fingers glide easily from
passionate flamenco "bulerias" through Puerto Rican "danzas" to an
irresistibly danceable Cuban "son" or a lyrical Venezuelan waltz.
Huanca was born in northern Chile and began playing folkloric
instruments at a very early age. He has been playing a variety of
instruments as a professional for 25 years and has performed
extensively throughout South America, Central America and the United
States, including a performance of Andean music at Carnegie Hall.
Huanca has recorded extensively and was responsible for the
background music for the BBC television documentary, "Flight of the
Condor." He has conducted workshops and lectures on topics related to
his field, including the teaching of panpipe making and playing to
elementary school children.
Before forming Sol y Canto, the Amadors were the founding members
of Boston's award-winning Latin band, Flor de Cana.
That group's album, Bailando en las muralla, reached the top 10
in Billboard's world music chart. Flor de Cana, which appeared at the
Summer Arts Festival last year, also was honored three times as
"Outstanding Latin Act" in the Boston Music Awards.
Sol y Canto's performance in Newark is sponsored by the
University of Delaware's Performing Arts Series.
