Poet to read from her work July 13
     Poet Fleda Jackson, associate professor of English, will read
from her work, Do Not Peel the Birches, at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 13,
in the Ewing Room of the Perkins Student Center.
     Her reading continues the Faculty Spotlight Series being held
this summer by the Perkins Student Center.
     Jackson, who describes herself as "a poet with an upside-down
life" began publishing her poetry 10 years ago. She says the recent
"wild burst of interest in the psyche" helped her find the courage to
begin sharing her poems with others.
     Jackson, who joined the University faculty in 1986, earned both
her master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Arkansas. She
has won numerous awards and prizes. Among her other books of poetry is
Fishing With Blood.

Sussex alumni to meet at art fest
     The Sussex County chapter of the University Alumni Association
will meet at the "Rock 'n' Roll 'n' Remember" show Saturday, July 16,
in Lewes, scheduled as part of the Summer Arts Festival.
     The 7:30 p.m. concert will feature Fabian, Bobby Rydell and The
Shirelles performing their million-selling hits, from Rydell's "Wild
One" and "Volare" to Fabian's "Turn Me Loose" and "Tiger" to The
Shirelles' "Tonight's The Night," "This is Dedicated to the One I
Love," "Baby It's You" and the immortal "Soldier Boy." The event will
be held on the University's Hugh R. Sharp Campus at 700 Pilottowm Rd.
     For alumni, a hospitality tent will open at 6 p.m. on the grounds
near the Virden Center.
     Those planning to attend can order tickets for the show by
sending a check, payable to the University of Delaware, to: University
of Delaware Office of Alumni and University Relations, Alumni Hall,
University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19716.
     For the "Rock 'n' Roll 'n' Remember" show, there is no charge for
children under the age of 7. Tickets are $5 for children 7-17 and $10
each for adults. Tickets will be mailed if orders are received by July
5, and after that date, tickets will be distributed at the hospitality
tent the night of the performance.
     Participants should being their own goodies, picnic baskets and
coolers or plan to purchase food from concession tents close by. They
also should bring their own lawn chairs or blankets.
     If inclement weather is forcast, telephone 6453-4100 on the day
of the event for information. Refunds will only be given if the event
is canceled.

Jazz, storyteller to team up on July 6
     Popular storyteller Charlotte Blake Alston will team up with her
brother, internationally known jazz violinist John Blake, and the John
Blake Jazz Ensemble for a performance of jazz and stories at 8 p.m.,
Wednesday, July 6, in the Amy E. du Pont Music Building. Tickets are
$5 at the door.
     Alston's performance repertoire includes tales from the African
and African-American experience, songs, educational raps, poetry and
dramatic presentations of historical figures such as Sojourner Truth
and Harriet Tubman.
     John Blake is regarded as one of the premier jazz violinists in
the world, a dynamic player and charismatic performer. Billboard
magazine cited him as "the best jazz violinist of the
decade...destined to be a force in jazz for years to come."
     Together Alston and Blake create a program designed for audiences
of all ages. Favorites include "How The Racoon Got His Dinner," "The
Story of Anniko" and "The Ant and the Crumb." Also included in each
performance are selections from Alston's popular "Rock, Rap and Roll"
program.
     The program is sponsored by the University of Delaware Performing
Arts Series.


Bus trip scheduled to see Blue Rocks
     The Perkins Student Center has scheduled a trip to a Wilmington
Blue Rocks game this summer.
     "Take me out to the ballgame," a trip to the game between the
Wilmington Blue Rocks and the Lynchburg Red Sox, will be held
Saturday, July 16. Buses will depart the Perkins Student Center
parking lot at 6 p.m. for the 7:05 p.m. game. Cost is $5 per ticket,
which includes both the game ticket and transportation.
     Tickets, which must be purchased in advance, are sold from 8:30
a.m.-4 p.m., Mondays-Fridays, in Room 107 of the Perkins Student
Center. University ID is required, and one guest is allowed for each
ID.

Stories, songs on campus July 12
     The Delaware Institute for the Arts in Education (DIAE) will
present "BLUESTORY!," featuring country blues, music and legends from
11 a.m.-noon, Tuesday, July 12, in Pearson Hall (formerly Newark Hall)
auditorium, on Academy Street. This performance is one of eight
performances/exhibits to be featured by DIAE during its 1994 summer
session for teachers.
     This collaboration will feature acoustic blues by John Cephas and
Phil Wiggins, with stories from the blues literature by Jackie
Torrence. The artists will perform both individually and together to
give the audience a look at the blues as literature as well as music.

Blue & Gold Club buffet mnight July 6
     The Blue & Gold Club will hold its monthly family night buffet
from 5-8 p.m., Wednesday, July 6, in the main dining room. The cost,
including service charge, is $10.95 for adults, $5.95 for children
ages 5 to 11, and free for children under 5.
