Doctoral recipients honored

     At the annual luncheon May 27 honoring 1993-94 doctoral degree
recipients, three students received awards for their dissertations.
     The Allan P. Colburn Prize in Engineering and Mathematical
Sciences was awarded to Vlasis Mavrantzas, chemical engineering, for
his dissertation, "Surface Effects on the Structure and the Rheology
of Dilute Polymer Solutions."  His adviser was Antony Beris.
     The Wilbur Owen Sypherd Prize in Humanities was awarded to
Melissa Mowry, English, for her dissertation entitled "Epistolary
Fiction and the Origin of the English Novel."  Her adviser was Jerry
Beasley.
     The Theodore Wolf Prize in Physical and Life Sciences was awarded
to Mary Ann Celenza, psychology, for her dissertation entitled
"Spatial Vision in the Bluegill Sunfish:  Optical, Retinal and
Retinotectal Determinants."  Her adviser was David Northmore.
     Each of the winners received a certificate and a check for
$1,000.
