David P. Roselle honored at West Chester commencement
University of Delaware President David P. Roselle received an
honorary degree from and was the commencement speaker at the 121st
graduation exercises of his alma mater West Chester University, held
Saturday, May 14.
In his remarks to the approximately 1,400 graduates, Roselle
spoke about the special meaning of relationships.
"As a mathematician," he said, "I am interested in the
relationship between numbers and values. An athlete may be interested
in the relationship between focus and performance; an artist with the
relationship between light and shadow; a musician with the
relationship between melody and harmony; an engineer with the
relationship between structure and safety; and on and on and on.
"Relationships help define what we study when we are students;
what we pursue when we are seeking a livelihood; what we enjoy in our
personal lives. Relationships help define what we do; and, more
importantly, they help define who we are...."
Roselle earned his bachelor of science degree from West Chester
State College in 1961 and his doctorate from Duke University in 1965.
In 1979, he was named a distinguished alumnus of West Chester
University.
