Up and coming
McCarthy era lecture June 29
Gary May, associate professor of history at the University of
Delaware, will discuss his new book, Un-American Activities: The
Trials of William Remington, at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 29, in the
Ewing Room of the Perkins Student Center.
His talk continues the University's Faculty Spotlight Series and
is free and open to the public.
His new book charts the rise and fall of a high government
official accused of being a Communist and Soviet spy.
May himself made history during his research for the book as the
first historian in the country to successfully petition for the
unsealing of grand jury records.
Remington was sent to prison for perjury, where he was murdered
by anti-Communist zealots. May's research revealed that while
Remington was no hero, the government, which brought about his
downfall, bent and broke the law to convict him and then failed to
adequately protect him in prison, where he was beaten to death at the
age of 37.
The book was published by Oxford University Press.
May also wrote China Scapegoat: The Diplomatic Ordeal of John
Carter Vincent, another McCarthy-era personality.
May joined the University of Delaware faculty in 1975. He
received his bachelor's and doctoral degrees from the University of
California, Los Angeles.
The Faculty Spotlight Series is sponsored by the Perkins Student
Center.
Blues program on campus July 12
The Delaware Institute for the Arts in Education (DIAE) will
present "BLUESTORY!," featuring country blues, music and legends from
11 a.m.-noon, Tuesday, July 12, in Pearson Hall Auditorium. This
performance is one of eight performances/exhibits to be featured by
DIAE during its 1994 summer session for teachers.
This collaboration will feature acoustic blues by John Cephas and
Phil Wiggins, with stories from the blues literature by Jackie
Torrence. The artists will perform both individually and together to
give the audience a look at the blues as literature as well as music.
Torrence learned storytelling from her grandfather, aunts and
uncles in the hills of rural North Carolina.
Wiggins has played the blues harp since he was a child. He has
performed with many blues artists over the years.
Cephas began playing the guitar at the age of 9.
For more information, contact DIAE's executive director, Marilyn
Bauman at 454-2217.
