Symphony, salsa, rock 'n' roll By the Sea in July

The University By the Sea Summer Arts Festival, scheduled July 9-
16 in Lewes, offers something for everyone-the young, the old, the
young at heart and audiences of many tastes.
Rock 'n' roll legends Bobby Rydell, Fabian and The Shirelles, the
annual Cape Concert by the Delaware Symphony, a performance of Aladdin
and the Magic Lamp and Latin American recording star Johnny Ray and
his Salsa Con Clase Orchestra are all featured.
Opening the festival Saturday, July 9, is the ever popular annual
Cape Concert by the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, featuring Stephen
Gunzenhauser, musical director and conductor, and renowned soprano
Marie Robinson, associate professor of music at the University.
As occurred in previous years, the Lancaster Cannon Co. will fire
its 16 vintage cannons, and a spectacular fireworks show will close
the program.
The symphony will play at 8 p.m. Audience members are encouraged
to pack a picnic and arrive early for a pre-symphony concert by the
Sin City Band, which begins at 5:30 p.m.
Advance tickets for the Cape Concert are $5 for children 7-17 and
$10 for adults. Tickets at the door cost $7 for children 7-17 and $12
for adults. Children under 7 are admitted free. Patron seating is
available by calling 855-1620 or 735-8200.
The symphony performance is sponsored by PNC Bank. The fireworks
finale is sponsored by WBOC-TV.
Through the magic of live musical theatre, the all-time favorite
Aladdin and the Magic Lamp will come to life at the festival on
Thursday, July 14, in a powerful production by American Family
Theatre's Broadway for Kids series.
The stage production will take place at 7:30 p.m.
There is no charge for children under the age of 17, and adult
tickets are $5 in advance or $7 at the door. The production is
sponsored by Wilmington Trust Co.
Johnny Ray, one of New York's hottest Latin American recording
and concert artists, performs with his Salsa Con Clase Orchestra on
Friday, July 15.
His voice has been compared to both Wayne Newton and Julio
Iglesias, and his music features the sultry sounds of Mexico and
Colombia, blended with the spicy dance music of Puerto Rico and the
Caribbean.
His concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets cost $3 for
children ages 7-17 and $5 for adults. At the door, tickets cost $5 for
children ages 7-17 and $7 for adults. There is no admission charge for
children under the age of 7.
"Rock 'n' Roll 'n' Remember" wraps up the festival on Saturday,
July 16, with a classic rock 'n' roll oldies show bound to knock your
socks off.
Favorites like Bobby Rydell's million-selling singles "Wild One"
and "Volare," Fabian's golden records "Turn Me Loose" and "Tiger," and
The Shirelles' megahits like "Tonight's The Night," "This Is Dedicated
To The One I love," "Baby It's You" and the immortal "Soldier Boy" all
will be featured.
This concert will be held at 7:30 p.m.
Advance tickets cost $5 for children 7-17 and $10 for adults.
