Students earn research awards

Two University undergraduates received awards for papers based on
the results of their research at the 58th Intercollegiate Student
Chemists Convention, held at West Chester University.
Raymond C. Trievel, a junior biochemistry major from Reading, Pa.,
received a first place award in one of the biochemistry divisions for
his presentation, "A Sensitive New Assay for Medium Chain Acyl-Co A
Dehydrogenase," and Eric D. Leavitt, a junior chemistry major from
Newark, received a second place award in the analytical division for
"Generation of VUV Radiation in Mercury Vapor."
Of the 36 papers presented by students from 13 colleges and
universities in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, seven were by
UD undergraduates.
In addition to Trievel and Leavitt, papers were presented by David
A. Anderson of York, Pa., "Disruption of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid
Metabolism in Riboflavin-Deficient Chicken Embryos"; Sunil Nayak of
Mission Viejo, Calif., "The Mechanism  HIV-1 Reverse Transcriptase";
Bhavana Joneja of Wilmington, "Purification and Characterization of a
New Flavoprotein from Egg White"; James M. Longmire of Bear, "New
Trialkylsilyl Enol Either Chemistry"; and Jonathan T. Goodman of
Walnut Creek, Calif., "Antioxidant Properties of Vitamin E: Will the
Phosphonates Have Superior Activity?"
