Trustees give green light to new campus student center
The University of Delaware Board of Trustees, at its regular
semiannual meeting May 18 in Cannon Laboratory on the Hugh R. Sharp Campus
in Lewes, authorized the University administration to proceed with
construction of the new student center on the Newark campus and renovation
of several campus buildings, including Brown and Drake halls, Taylor Gym,
the Kent Dining Hall, Brown Residence Hall and the University Bookstore in
the Perkins Student Center.
Pending state allocation of the $2 million requested in the FY95 Bond
Bill, the board also authorized the administration to proceed with
convening the board's Architecture Committee to select an architect for the
proposed College of Business and Economics building.
In other action, the trustees approved increases in room and board
rates and other incidental fees. Housing rates were raised an average of
3.8 percent, and contract meal plans for the academic year will increase an
average of 5.8 percent.
The Board of Trustees also passed resolutions:

degree and to the bachelor of applied science degrees with majors
in engineering technology and agricultural engineering;

joins the Army ROTC program already on the campus;

Institutional Management Program laboratory, and $1 million for
medical technology scholarships ($960,000 still to be raised);
* renaming Newark Hall on Academy Street as Pearson Hall, in honor
of the Hon. and Mrs. G. Burton Pearson Jr., who have provided
outstanding service and support to the University throughout many
years;

Foreign Language Media Center, in honor of the associate
professor of foreign languages and literatures;

Commencement on Saturday, May 28.
The board also saluted Olympic ice skaters Karen Courtland and Todd
Reynolds and Ron Ludington and staff and athletes "who continue to bring
honor and recognition on themselves and the University of Delaware."
